# AI Flashcard Tutor in 2026: Quiz Due Cards and Save FSRS Reviews Over MCP

Ask Claude to quiz you on your due cards, and the Flashcards connector hands it one question: a card ID and the front text. The back isn't in that response. Once you answer, the tutor fetches the stored answer, tells you what you missed, and records Again, Hard, Good, or Easy as a real FSRS review. After your phone syncs, that card already has its next due date.

That's what an **AI flashcard tutor** can do with Flashcards over MCP now. The connector has three review tools, `next_review_card`, `reveal_answer`, and `submit_review`, so a review in the chat counts the same as a review in the app. Earlier versions of this guide described a read-only quiz that you had to repeat in the app afterward. The review tools replaced that workaround.

One part deserves your attention: the tutor does the grading. By default it announces a rating with a short reason and saves it without asking you to confirm, and a saved review can't be edited through these tools. You can still get a say in every grade, and this guide shows the three ways to do it.

## What happens to one card

Every card goes through the same five steps:

1. `next_review_card` returns a `cardId` and `frontText`, or `card: null` when nothing is due. It uses the same queue order as the web, iOS, and Android apps: due cards you reviewed within the last hour come first, then other due cards, then new cards.
2. The tutor shows you the front and waits for your answer.
3. `reveal_answer` returns the `backText` for that card.
4. The tutor compares your first attempt with the stored answer, explains what was right and what essential part was missing, and announces a rating with a short reason.
5. `submit_review` records the rating. The server stamps the review time, runs your workspace's FSRS scheduler, and sends back the card's new schedule.

With the default rules, steps 4 and 5 happen back to back. The tutor doesn't stop to ask whether you agree with its rating.

Nothing is reserved between those steps. If a chat reconnects halfway, `next_review_card` returns whatever is first in the queue again, which can be the same card. There's also only one way to write a review. The SQL tools can read `review_events`, but they can't write review history or FSRS scheduling state, so `submit_review` is the single path into your schedule.

The grading rules come from Flashcards, so the tutor doesn't have to invent them. `get_guide` with the topic `review_flow` returns the full review loop and rating rules. On MCP, each review tool repeats those rules in its result, so a long session doesn't depend on the tutor remembering a guide it read twenty minutes earlier.

Showing the front alone turns each card into a retrieval attempt. In one randomized trial, pediatric and emergency medicine residents took repeated short-answer tests with feedback on one topic and repeatedly studied a review sheet with the same information on another. More than six months later, the 40 residents who finished scored an average of 39% on the tested topic and 26% on the studied one, according to the [published abstract](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19930508/). That was a small medical-education study, not a test of AI tutors. It still backs the basic design here: try first, then see the answer. ## Connect Claude, ChatGPT, or Codex

Every MCP client uses the same server URL:

Interactive clients sign in through OAuth 2.1 with PKCE and Dynamic Client Registration. You approve access in the browser and don't paste a key or register an app first. Where you add the URL depends on the client:

- In Claude, add Flashcards as a custom connector under **Customize > Connectors**. Anthropic's [custom connector guide](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11175166-get-started-with-custom-connectors-using-remote-mcp) says Free plans are limited to one custom connector, and on Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds the connector for the organization first. - In ChatGPT, Flashcards connects as a custom MCP app. Saving a review is a write action, and whether and how you can add an app with write access depends on your plan and workspace. On some plans, an admin sets the app up or publishes it for members. Check OpenAI's [help article on developer mode and MCP apps](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-developer-mode-and-mcp-apps-in-chatgpt) for the current steps on your plan.
- In Codex, add a Streamable HTTP server under **Settings > MCP servers** in the ChatGPT desktop app, or run `codex mcp add flashcards --url https://mcp.nibomo.com/mcp` followed by `codex mcp login flashcards`. You can also skip the connection entirely. The AI chat inside Flashcards has the same review tools, so the loop works there too. Terminal agents that don't speak MCP can call the same review actions as HTTP routes, documented in the [Agent API reference](/docs/api/).

## Turn on only the tools a review needs

The connector has seven tools. A review session uses five of them: `list_workspaces`, `get_guide`, `next_review_card`, `reveal_answer`, and `submit_review`. `sql_query` helps when you want the tutor to look up a deck or tag name. `sql_execute` creates, edits, and deletes cards and decks. A review never needs it, so block it for this session if your client lets you.

`submit_review` has to stay on, since it's the only write in the loop. Flashcards marks it as destructive and not read-only, because it overwrites the card's due date, review counts, and FSRS state. Some clients use that marking to decide when to ask for your approval, which becomes useful when you want to check grades.

## Copy this tutor prompt

“Quiz me on my flashcards” works as an opening line. A few specifics make the session more predictable, so replace the time zone with your own and paste this instead:

Step 5 follows the default in the `review_flow` rules: the tutor explains, announces its rating, and submits without asking for confirmation. That keeps the session moving. If you'd rather choose every rating yourself, swap in this line:

Manual ratings are part of the same rules. Asking the tutor to wait for your okay on each of its own ratings isn't: the rules tell it to submit without asking, and on MCP every review result repeats them. If you want that kind of pause, use manual ratings or a client approval prompt instead.

The time zone line matters more than it looks. `submit_review` requires an IANA time zone name, such as `Europe/Berlin` or `Asia/Tokyo`, and it decides which local day the review counts toward for streaks and progress. Stating it saves the tutor from guessing.

The hint rule is your own addition on top of `review_flow`. It follows the same logic as [choosing between Again and Hard](/blog/again-vs-hard-fsrs-flashcards/): if you needed a hint to get there, your unaided attempt failed.

## How the tutor picks Again, Hard, Good, or Easy

The `review_flow` guide gives the tutor specific rules. It judges meaning, so a correct answer in different words passes, and leaving out an optional example isn't penalized. The four ratings mean:

- Again: no recall, a wrong essential answer, or needing the answer supplied.
- Hard: the essential answer came back, with visible difficulty or a self-correction before the reveal.
- Good: correct recall of the essential answer.
- Easy: complete recall that was clearly effortless.

A few more rules keep the grade honest. The tutor grades the attempt you made before its feedback, not the corrected version you just learned from the reveal. If your answer or the stored answer is ambiguous, it should ask before grading. Silence, an interruption, or a request to skip doesn't count as a failed attempt.

Effort is the weak spot. The tutor only sees what you type, so a correct answer you struggled with for thirty seconds can look exactly like an instant one. When effort is unclear, the rules default to Good, and the tutor shouldn't read effort into transcription or network delays. If a card took real work, say so in your answer.

## Catch a wrong grade before it's saved

These tools can't edit a saved review, and the rules tell the tutor not to submit a second review just to change a rating. So a correction has to happen before `submit_review` runs. The default flow leaves no pause for that, and there are three ways to get one:

- Name the rating with your answer. The rules tell the tutor to honor a rating you state before submission, so “Canberra. Took me a while, call it Hard” should be saved as Hard.
- Ask for manual ratings with the swapped step 5 above. The tutor reveals the answer and waits for you to pick.
- Use a client you can set to ask before write tools run. A call you deny never reaches Flashcards, so nothing is saved. If the tool input shows a rating you disagree with, deny it and tell the tutor which rating to send.

Each client handles that approval step differently:

- In Claude, set `submit_review` to **Needs approval** in the connector's tool permissions. Anthropic's [connector help page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11176164-use-connectors-to-extend-claude-s-capabilities) lists **Always allow**, **Needs approval**, and **Blocked** for each tool, and on Team and Enterprise plans an owner can also restrict tools for the whole organization. - In ChatGPT, don't count on a confirmation step before `submit_review`. ChatGPT may ask for confirmation before a write action, depending on the app's permissions and your workspace. Naming the rating in your answer and manual ratings work in every client, so rely on those in ChatGPT.

In Codex, the `writes` approval mode prompts for tools that aren't marked read-only. Codex keeps MCP servers in `~/.codex/config.toml`, or in a project's `.codex/config.toml` if you scoped the server to that project. Find the existing `[mcp_servers.<name>]` table for Flashcards there, where `<name>` is whatever you named the server (`flashcards` if you used the `codex mcp add` command above), add this line under it, save the file, and restart Codex. From then on, Codex asks before each `submit_review` and `sql_execute` call:

Approving every rating gets tedious after a while. Once the tutor's grades match what you'd have pressed on your own cards, letting it save on its own is a reasonable choice.

## What a saved review changes

A submitted rating is scheduled with FSRS the same way as a review in the app, using your workspace's scheduler settings: desired retention, learning and relearning steps, maximum interval, and fuzz. The defaults are 0.90 desired retention, learning steps of 1 and 10 minutes, and one 10-minute relearning step. The result includes the new `dueAt`, the interval, the card's state, and its `reps` and `lapses` counts, which is how the tutor can tell you when a card returns. The review lands in the same review history the apps use. After the web, iOS, or Android app syncs, the card shows its new due date there.

A missed card can come back during the same session. With the default steps it's due again within minutes, and `next_review_card` puts recently reviewed due cards ahead of other due cards. So if the session runs long enough, expect to see a card again after an Again.

The server stamps the review time itself, so tutor reviews need a live connection. They're online actions and can't import reviews you did somewhere else. Offline reviewing stays in the Flashcards apps, which sync as usual.

## If a submission fails or the chat drops

Each review carries a `reviewId`, a UUID the tutor generates for that single review. It's what stops a retry from counting twice:

- Retrying with the same `reviewId` never records a second review. If the first attempt already landed, the retry answers `REVIEW_EVENT_CONFLICT` with the card's current schedule, so the tutor can report the due date instead of submitting again.
- A `reviewId` reused on a different card is refused with `REVIEW_ID_CARD_MISMATCH`. Nothing is saved for that card, and the tutor needs a fresh `reviewId` to submit it.
- `REVIEW_STALE` means the card's stored review time is at or after the current server time. Move on to another card.

When a tutor says a submission failed, ask which code came back before it moves on. That tells you whether your rating was saved.

## Review one deck or a few tags

`next_review_card` accepts one optional filter. `tags` limits the queue to cards carrying any of the listed tags, matched without regard to capitalization. A tag your workspace doesn't use returns an error instead of an empty queue, so a typo is easy to spot. `deckId` limits the queue to a saved deck, which in Flashcards is a stored tag filter; a deck with no tags matches every card.

You can use one filter or the other, not both. Add a line like this to the prompt:

If you don't remember the exact names, the tutor can look up your decks or tags with `sql_query` first. When the filter has nothing due, `next_review_card` returns `card: null` and the session should end. Cards due in the future are never included.

## Limits worth knowing before you start

The grade is the model's judgment. `submit_review` stores whatever rating the tutor sends, and Flashcards has no way to check whether your answer deserved it. By default nothing asks you between the reveal and the save, so pick one of the checks above until you trust the tutor's grading.

Hiding the back is a convention of the loop. `sql_query` can read both sides of a card, so a tutor that ignores the loop could see the back early. Blocking `sql_query` closes that path in clients with per-tool controls, at the cost of deck and tag lookups.

Card text leaves Flashcards. Fronts, backs, and your answers go to the AI client and whichever model provider it uses, under that provider's retention and training settings. ## FAQ about AI flashcard tutors

### Can Claude or ChatGPT quiz me on my own flashcards?

Yes. Connect the Flashcards MCP server as a custom connector in Claude, as a custom MCP app in ChatGPT if your plan and workspace allow apps with write access, or as an MCP server in Codex. The tutor then pulls one card at a time from your review queue with `next_review_card`.

### Does the tutor ask before saving each rating?

Not by default. The `review_flow` rules tell it to announce the rating with a short reason and submit without asking for confirmation. To check every grade, ask for manual ratings, or set Claude or Codex to ask before `submit_review` runs.

### Does a review in the chat count like a review in the app?

Yes. `submit_review` records the rating in the same review history and runs your workspace's FSRS scheduler. The card gets its next due date, and the apps show it after they sync.

### Can I change a rating after the tutor saved it?

Not through the MCP tools. A saved review can't be edited there, and submitting another review would record a second review. ## Start with five cards

Change the limit in the prompt to five and set your client to ask before `submit_review` runs, as Claude and Codex can. Before you approve each call, compare the rating the tutor wants to send with the one you'd have pressed, and deny any you disagree with. Then open [Nibomo](https://app.flashcards-open-source-app.com/) and check the due dates those reviews set. If the tutor's grades matched yours, let it run longer on its own. If they didn't, you've found out after five reviews instead of a week of them. ChatGPT may ask for confirmation depending on the app's permissions and your workspace, but you can't count on it. There, and in any client without a dependable approval step, start with manual ratings or name the rating in each answer.
