# RemNote Card Clusters: Keep Related Questions Without Giving Answers Away

*2026-11-04*

“Where is the hand-stamp with the crossed-lines mark stored?” looks like a reasonable flashcard. Put it before “What mark identifies the hand-stamp?” and the first question has already answered the second. The answer can leak through the question, even when every card has a short back.

For RemNote card clusters, check that each question still asks you to retrieve something after reading its neighbors. A small fictional workshop exercise makes that check concrete, with an answer ledger you can use before editing your own notes.

## Set up three related questions

[RemNote's official cluster guide](https://help.remnote.com/en/articles/10104223-card-clusters) describes this setup: nest related cards under a parent, then apply the Card Cluster power-up to that parent with `/cluster`. Basic forward cards work in clusters. During practice, earlier cluster items appear in gray; later items have empty boxes. Spaced-repetition practice asks only the due cards, while retaining earlier context.

**Evidence checked November 4, 2026:** the product instructions come from documentation. The exercise below is a proposed rehearsal with expected outcomes, not an executed RemNote test or a reproduction of exact screen wording.

Imagine a workshop with three invented rules:

- The hand-stamp is stored in the blue tin.
- Two crossed lines identify the hand-stamp.
- Each issue slip is made in three copies.

These are arbitrary practice facts, not advice about running a workshop. The goal is to notice which information the front supplies.

Paste this into an empty practice document:

```text
Hand-stamp station
  Where is the hand-stamp stored? >> The blue tin
  What mark identifies the hand-stamp? >> Two crossed lines
  How many copies of each issue slip are made? >> Three copies
```

The `>>` delimiter makes a basic forward card, and indentation supplies nesting, as documented in [RemNote's text-import guide](https://help.remnote.com/en/articles/9252072-how-to-import-flashcards-from-text). Apply `/cluster` to `Hand-stamp station` in the editor; the plain heading in this block doesn't apply the power-up by itself.

## Write the answers before checking the context

Keep this ledger outside the practice document. Pasting it above the questions would add the answers to the very material you're trying to audit.

| Question target | Complete answer | Insufficient answer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Storage location | The blue tin | A tin, without identifying which one |
| Identifying mark | Two crossed lines | Some lines |
| Issue-slip quantity | Three copies of each slip | A copy |

Accept equivalent wording. “A pair of crossing lines” expresses the second rule; “two lines” leaves out their arrangement. For the quantity, “three” is enough when it clearly answers the copies question. This exercise checks meaning, not whether you repeat the back word for word.

The ledger also exposes a useful distinction: the location and the mark are separate targets. They belong to the same object, but remembering one doesn't establish that you remembered the other.

## Audit one question at a time

The starting outline keeps the three facts separate. Now deliberately introduce a leak: change only its first question to this variant. Leave its answer and the other questions unchanged.

```text
Where is the hand-stamp with the crossed-lines mark stored? >> The blue tin
```

Use the documented display rule to audit this altered outline:

| Current question | Earlier items available as context | Expected audit result |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Storage location | None | The location still needs recalling |
| Identifying mark | Storage question and answer | Fails: the earlier question says “crossed-lines mark” |
| Issue-slip quantity | Storage and mark items | The copy count still needs recalling |

For the second question, the front effectively contains its own answer. Reading the gray text and saying “crossed lines” wouldn't demonstrate that you remembered the mark independently.

In your own review, read the entire visible front before revealing the back. If it supplies the target, edit the card rather than counting that attempt as evidence of unaided recall.

## Repair the grouping

Remove the identifying mark from the location question. The complete repaired outline is:

```text
Hand-stamp station
  Where is the hand-stamp stored? >> The blue tin
  What mark identifies the hand-stamp? >> Two crossed lines
  How many copies of each issue slip are made? >> Three copies
```

Only the first question has changed. The storage item now contains neither crossed lines nor a slip quantity. The mark item contains no copy rule. The three facts still share a subject, but each answer needs recalling. Repeat those checks in your own card display after editing.

If “with the crossed-lines mark” is essential for distinguishing several stamps, removing it may make the location question ambiguous. In that case, move the revealing location card outside this cluster and give it enough context to stand alone. Don't trade an answer leak for a question with several possible answers.

Also check the parent heading. Renaming it `Blue-tin station` would hand over the location answer. A neutral subject such as `Hand-stamp station` identifies the exercise without answering any of its questions. For more complex outlines, the [concept and descriptor guide](/blog/remnote-concept-descriptor-cards/) works through a separate ancestor-context audit.

## Choose a cluster only for the job you need

RemNote multi-line cards put several answer items behind one prompt; sets reveal them together, and lists reveal them in sequence. See the [official multi-line documentation](https://help.remnote.com/en/articles/9216774-multi-line-list-set-flashcards).

For this workshop, asking “What are the station's three rules?” creates a different task: producing the whole rule group. Choose that only if reciting the group is useful. The [multi-line card guide](/blog/remnote-multi-line-cards/) explains how to separate membership, sequence, and individual questions.

Keep ordinary separate cards when nearby information adds little or repeatedly gives the answer away. Start your own audit with three questions, write the expected answers elsewhere, and inspect the second and third fronts especially carefully. A tidy outline earns its place when the questions remain clear and answerable on their own terms.
