# RemNote to Anki: Export Cards and Check What Survives

*2026-10-02*

RemNote can export flashcards directly to an Anki `.apkg` file. But a card that imports successfully can still ask a different question: its parent heading might supply a necessary clue, or give away the answer. The useful part of a RemNote to Anki move is checking that boundary before you rely on the new deck.

Use the native export, rehearse in a separate Anki collection, and compare a few demanding examples with their originals. Keep RemNote as your study source until you have a clear decision about content, behavior, and review state.

**Documentation checked:** October 2, 2026. This is a proposed export audit based on official documentation, not a report of a hands-on migration. The worked observations below are hypothetical.

## Export an existing document first

Choose a small existing RemNote document containing cards you actually study. Include a parent-dependent question, multiple choice if you use it, and your more complicated formats. For history checks, find an established card due later, a due-now card, and an unseen card; use another existing document if needed.

Leave the source material in place. Copying studied bullets into a new test document can change what you're testing: RemNote's [backup guide](https://help.remnote.com/en/articles/6301627-remnote-backups) warns that copying and pasting may lose review history. Newly made examples can check question behavior, but they can't establish that old reviews transfer.

Before exporting, save a **RemNote (Complete)** backup through **Settings > Export**. Keep uploaded files separately; the manual backup excludes them. On desktop, the backup guide identifies dated `.db.zip` backups and a separate `files` folder for uploaded media. Preserve explanations and sources you'll still need outside the cards.

To export RemNote flashcards to Anki, follow the [official export instructions](https://help.remnote.com/en/articles/7898019-exporting-and-printing-notes):

1. Open the document's three-dot menu and choose **Export**.
2. Select **Anki (Flashcards Only)**.
3. Download the `.apkg` file and record its date and source document.

For the whole knowledge base, use **Settings > Export**. Non-card bullets are omitted from this format; exported cards deliberately include their parent hierarchy. Keep a separate readable note export if you plan to consult your notebook outside RemNote.

You don't need a CSV conversion for this route. The [APKG versus COLPKG guide](/blog/anki-apkg-vs-colpkg/) explains the difference between a deck package and a full Anki collection backup.

## Import without changing the evidence

On desktop Anki, use **File > Switch Profile** to add a temporary profile, then import the `.apkg` there. Leave it disconnected from AnkiWeb. Anki's [profile documentation](https://docs.ankiweb.net/profiles.html) says each profile has its own collection and program settings, while add-ons are shared. This separates your rehearsal cards from your main collection; add-on behavior still applies.

If available, select **Import any learning progress** for this rehearsal of your own cards. Anki 23.10 and later can remove scheduling information during import when that option is unselected. It can only preserve information present in the file: the [packaged-deck manual](https://docs.ankiweb.net/importing/packaged-decks.html) says `.apkg` files *may* contain scheduling data. The extension alone proves nothing about RemNote review history reaching Anki.

Record the Anki version and import options with your export date. Inspect cards before rating them, so a practice session doesn't obscure their starting state.

## Check what the parent heading does to the question

Compare the source review view with the imported front and back. An outline can make a short question sensible. It can also put the target answer above the question.

Consider this invented study outline, written here as plain text rather than RemNote card syntax:

```text
Plane geometry
  Euclidean triangles
    Sum of interior angles? → 180°
Descriptive statistics
  Median
    Which measure uses the middle value of a sorted odd-sized list? → Median
```

The first prompt needs its triangle context. “Sum of interior angles?” on its own doesn't specify the shape. A usable imported question should retain that scope or state it in the prompt.

The second prompt asks you to retrieve **median**. If the imported front shows the parent heading “Median,” that question has already answered itself. The same heading may have been visible in your original reviews too; compare both views before attributing the problem to export.

In Anki, open **Browse**, select **Cards** mode, find the example, and use **Preview** to inspect the rendered question. The [browser manual](https://docs.ankiweb.net/browsing.html) distinguishes card rows from note rows; in Notes mode, Preview shows only the first card of a note.

Write down exactly which parent text appears before the answer. Don't remove all hierarchy just because one heading leaks an answer. In the rehearsal copy, a self-contained triangle front could read “What is the sum of interior angles in a Euclidean triangle?” For the statistics question, keep “Descriptive statistics” as useful scope and remove “Median” from the front. Preview every affected direction after a repair.

## Find where the multiple-choice answer appears

RemNote's export documentation says the correct option is bolded because Anki doesn't support this card type out of the box. It doesn't specify which side carries that mark. Check the front/back boundary directly.

Use an easy-to-recognize example:

```text
Which fraction equals 0.25?
A. 1/2
B. 1/4
C. 3/4
```

Look at the imported front without revealing the answer. All three options should be readable, and **1/4** should not stand out as correct through bold text, placement, or another clue. Then reveal the back and check that the answer is identifiable.

For ordinary reveal practice, an acceptable arrangement is the question and unmarked options on the front, with “B. 1/4” on the back. Bold text on that back can help you find the answer. The same bold text on the front would defeat this question.

If you depend on clicking an option and receiving RemNote's feedback, write that down as a separate requirement and test it. A card that displays the correct option after reveal doesn't establish that interaction. Try any proposed repair on one imported example before estimating the work across all your multiple-choice material.

## A good preview isn't the whole editing workflow

Anki [notes and cards](https://docs.ankiweb.net/getting-started.html) are different objects: fields in a note can generate more than one card. A matching note count can hide a missing review direction.

For **gato ↔ cat**, record two questions if you study both directions. Find and preview each independently. “I can find the words” is weaker evidence than “both expected prompts exist and conceal their answers.”

Open the imported note's fields too. Find the question, answer, explanation, and source where present. Try one edit you expect to make regularly, then preview all affected cards. If you often add another cloze blank, try that operation. If you revise a list, check whether each intended question changes with it.

A rendered blank can look right without becoming an equivalent native Anki cloze note. Likewise, a finished question and answer can be editable while requiring you to maintain several related cards manually. Record the representation you actually find; don't assume a familiar preview means you can keep authoring in the same way.

For your remaining formats, make the requirement specific:

- For clozes, list which words should be hidden together and which surrounding text must remain visible.
- For lists, state whether you recall the whole list or one item at a time.
- For image occlusion, check the concealed region, neighboring labels, and revealed answer at normal study size.
- For audio and diagrams, play or open the media. If offline use matters, repeat the check offline on your intended device.

These are acceptance checks, not claims that every RemNote format converts into a matching Anki note type. If an explanation remains only in RemNote, record how you'll consult it after switching.

## Keep review history separate from the due date

Before export, record what RemNote exposes for your established, due-now, and unseen examples: recent review dates, interval, next due date, and current study status. Mark unavailable values **unknown**.

In Anki's browser, select the corresponding card and open **Cards > Info**. Anki's [Card Info documentation](https://docs.ankiweb.net/stats.html#card-info) describes its interval and review-history section. Record that evidence before giving a rating.

Compare prior reviews, current interval or due state, and new-versus-reviewed status separately. A new card's Due value can represent its queue position rather than a date, as the browser manual explains. A familiar-looking due date on a reviewed card doesn't prove its earlier reviews arrived.

The RemNote export page doesn't promise schedule fidelity. Transferred history also doesn't establish identical future intervals, scheduler settings, or trained parameters. If continuity matters and you can't explain a difference, pause with a specific example for support. Don't reset cards or set due dates to make the rehearsal look familiar; that changes the evidence you need to assess.

## A worked decision record

These are **hypothetical observations**, not measured export results. They show how one deck can contain usable questions, repair work, and an unresolved history check.

| Source example and requirement | Hypothetical Anki observation | Decision |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Triangle: retain the shape context, conceal 180° | Front specifies Euclidean triangles; 180° appears after reveal | Pass for this question |
| Median: retrieve the measure's name without a clue | Front includes “Median” above the question | Repair the revealing front text, then preview again |
| Fraction multiple choice: unmarked options before reveal; correct answer afterward | 1/4 is bold only on the back; no option-clicking interaction | Pass if ordinary reveal practice is sufficient |
| gato ↔ cat: practice both directions | Only gato → cat can be found | Investigate the missing direction before accepting the pair |
| Studied triangle card: source shows a September 25 review, a 14-day interval, and October 9 due date | Anki shows October 9 as due, but the September 25 review cannot be verified | Due date observed; history unknown. Pause if continuity is required |

Copy this shorter ledger for your real material. Leave results empty until you inspect them; use **pass**, **repair**, or **unknown** with a concrete observation.

| Source document and question | Required context, behavior, media, or review state | Actual Anki observation | Result and next action |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
|  |  |  |  |

For each repair, estimate how many similar questions need it and test the change on the sample. One heading fix may be manageable. Hundreds of manually rebuilt interactions may change your decision. If the daily workflow no longer fits, revisit the [RemNote alternatives guide](/blog/remnote-alternative/) before committing to that work.

Proceed when every required question is usable, necessary media works, and each scheduling difference is explained or deliberately accepted. Keep unknowns visible. Cosmetic changes can be acceptable; an exposed answer changes the study task.

## Use a fresh export for the actual move

Continue normal study in RemNote during the rehearsal. When you're ready, make a fresh backup and export: the old package won't contain later edits or reviews.

Decide how to handle the rehearsal import before importing again. Anki documents package updates, but that doesn't establish that repeated RemNote exports will merge every identity, repair, and review state as you intend. Keep the temporary collection separate and repeat your ledger on the final import.

Then choose one app for ongoing reviews of that material. Keep the RemNote backup, media, and source notes available until the new workflow has held up in ordinary study. Your acceptance record should tell you what survived, what you repaired, and what you chose to leave behind.
