French conversational fillers: meaning and register

64 cards for English readers: understand 32 French fillers and discourse expressions in short contexts, then practise expression recall, contrasts, register and restrained use.

O tomto balíčku

Practise the small French expressions that help speakers hesitate, clarify, organize a story, connect ideas and involve a listener. The deck has English prompts and explanations with short, original French exchanges. It is intended for readers who already understand simple French sentences, with a focus on conversation in France. The expressions are not exclusive to France, and this is not a guide to every French-speaking region.

The 64 cards cover 32 selected expressions. The first 32 ask for the function or meaning of a highlighted marker in one context. The remaining 32 apply the distinctions: 9 constrained expression-recall prompts, 8 choices, 6 register decisions, 5 sense contrasts and 4 usage questions. The back begins with the answer and adds brief context. English glosses describe the illustrated use, rather than claiming a universal translation. Informal particles such as hein, final quoi and approximating genre are especially useful to recognize before trying to produce them.

Four tags group the work: hesitation, organization, links and interaction. Each card also has the root tag french-discourse. A mixed introduction comes before the application prompts; related forms and paired tasks are separated by at least three other cards. The app schedules later reviews. Basic meanings precede decisions about register, overuse and competing senses.

Recall is selective and constrained because many situations admit several natural French expressions. The cards do not mechanically reverse every translation or grade open-ended conversation. They also do not test audio recognition, pronunciation, accent, timing or fluency. Text practice can support later listening, but listening to real speakers is still necessary. A pause or a direct answer is often enough; adding fillers everywhere is not a learning goal.

The contexts, questions, explanations and organization were independently composed with AI assistance. Lexical senses were checked against the Trésor de la langue française informatisé via CNRTL, with contextual and careful-usage checks from Académie française, OQLF and primary linguistic research. Source definitions, literary examples, course exercises, competitor decks, examination text and private learner cards were not copied. The cover is an original AI-generated illustration.

    Otázka

    What does euh signal here?

    — On se retrouve à quelle heure ? — Euh… vers six heures.

    Odpoveď

The speaker is hesitating while finding an answer (roughly ‘um’).

‘Around six.’ Euh is a spoken pause, not a precise time expression.

  2. Kartička 2

    Otázka

    What does bon do here?

Bon, on arrête de discuter et on choisit un restaurant.

    Odpoveď

It marks a transition toward a decision: ‘Right/okay, let’s stop discussing and choose a restaurant.’

This bon is not the adjective ‘good’; tone can make the transition gentle or firm.

  3. Kartička 3

    Otázka

    What link does donc express?

La salle est complète, donc on réserve pour demain.

    Odpoveď

A consequence: ‘The room is full, so we’re booking for tomorrow.’

Here donc links the decision to the preceding fact. It does not always carry a strong logical meaning in spontaneous speech.

  4. Kartička 4

    Otázka

What is hein ? doing here?

Il est joli, ce jardin, hein ?

    Odpoveď

Inviting agreement: ‘This garden’s pretty, isn’t it?’

Conversational and informal. The same hein? said alone can mean ‘Huh?/What?’; context and tone decide.

  5. Kartička 5

    Otázka

What does ben do in this casual response?

    — Pourquoi tu attends ici ? — Ben… j’ai oublié ma clé.

    Odpoveď

It introduces a hesitant response: roughly ‘Well… I forgot my key.’

Ben is an informal spoken form associated with eh bien. Its effect depends on the response and tone.

  6. Kartička 6

    Otázka

    What does alors do here?

Alors, qu’est-ce qu’on prépare pour le dîner ?

    Odpoveď

It opens the next conversational step: ‘So, what shall we make for dinner?’

Here it organizes the exchange. It does not mean ‘at that time’, although alors can have that meaning elsewhere.

  7. Kartička 7

    Otázka

What does du coup link here in casual speech?

Le bus est tombé en panne. Du coup, on a pris un taxi.

    Odpoveď

An event and its consequence: ‘The bus broke down, so we took a taxi.’

This everyday spoken use is common in France. It is not a universal equivalent for every ‘so’ or ‘basically’.

  8. Kartička 8

    Otázka

What does tu vois ? do here?

Je préfère partir tôt, tu vois ? Comme ça, on évite la foule.

    Odpoveď

It checks or invites understanding: roughly ‘you see?/you know?’

The speaker draws the listener into the explanation. Here voir is not about literally seeing an object.

  9. Kartička 9

    Otázka

    What does enfin introduce here?

On part jeudi… enfin, vendredi matin.

    Odpoveď

    A self-correction: ‘We’re leaving Thursday… I mean, Friday morning.’

This is one spoken use of enfin. It does not mean ‘finally’ in this context.

  10. Kartička 10

    Otázka

    What does bref announce here?

Le train était plein, il faisait chaud, on était debout. Bref, le voyage était fatigant.

    Odpoveď

A summary: ‘In short, the trip was tiring.’

Bref compresses the preceding details. It is a discourse connector here, not just an adjective meaning ‘brief’.

  11. Kartička 11

    Otázka

What does en fait signal here?

Je pensais que c’était fermé. En fait, c’est ouvert jusqu’à neuf heures.

    Odpoveď

A correction of the assumption: ‘Actually, it’s open until nine.’

En fait concerns what is really the case here. It is not au fait, which can introduce a remembered topic.

  12. Kartička 12

    Otázka

What does vous voyez invite here?

Ce modèle prend moins de place, vous voyez ? C’est utile dans une petite cuisine.

    Odpoveď

The listener’s understanding: roughly ‘you see?’

It draws attention to the point. Vous matches a vous relationship or several listeners; it does not automatically make every tone polite.

  13. Kartička 13

    Otázka

    What does disons signal here?

Le trajet prend… disons, une demi-heure.

    Odpoveď

A tentative estimate: ‘The journey takes… let’s say, half an hour.’

The speaker is choosing an approximate formulation, not guaranteeing an exact duration.

  14. Kartička 14

    Otázka

What does voilà do at the end?

Tu cliques sur « envoyer », et voilà !

    Odpoveď

It presents the completed result: roughly ‘and there you go!’

Voilà has other uses, including pointing something out. This exchange is about finishing a simple action.

  15. Kartička 15

    Otázka

    What does d’ailleurs add here?

Je préfère ce café. D’ailleurs, il est plus près de chez nous.

    Odpoveď

An extra supporting point: ‘Besides, it’s nearer our home.’

The second fact reinforces the preference. D’ailleurs can do other jobs; this is not a universal translation.

  16. Kartička 16

    Otázka

What does the final quoi do here?

Je voudrais une soirée calme : un film, un thé… une pause, quoi.

    Odpoveď

It rounds off the formulation: roughly ‘a break, you know.’

This informal final quoi is not a question meaning ‘what?’. Listen for its role before trying to add it to your own speech.

  17. Kartička 17

    Otázka

    What does comment dire indicate?

Son idée est… comment dire… assez originale.

    Odpoveď

A search for the right wording: ‘His/her idea is… how shall I put it… rather unusual.’

The pause can soften a delicate description; the marker does not supply the missing content.

  18. Kartička 18

    Otázka

What does au fait introduce here?

Au fait, tu as retrouvé ton carnet ?

    Odpoveď

A remembered question: ‘By the way, did you find your notebook?’

This conversational au fait is not en fait (‘actually’ in a correction).

  19. Kartička 19

    Otázka

What relation does par contre mark?

La chambre est petite. Par contre, elle est très lumineuse.

    Odpoveď

A contrast: ‘The room is small. On the other hand, it’s very bright.’

The second feature balances the first. Par contre is not an empty hesitation sound here.

  20. Kartička 20

    Otázka

What does genre mean in this casual estimate?

Il y avait genre trente personnes.

    Odpoveď

Approximately/about: ‘There were, like, thirty people.’

This is a very informal spoken use. Genre also means ‘type/kind’ as a noun and has other spoken uses; do not translate it as ‘like’ everywhere.

  21. Kartička 21

    Otázka

    What does voyons do here?

Voyons… où est mon billet ?

    Odpoveď

It gives the speaker a moment to think: ‘Let’s see… where’s my ticket?’

It is self-directed here. Addressed sharply to someone else, voyons can instead sound like a reproach.

  22. Kartička 22

    Otázka

What does à propos do here?

    — J’ai parlé à Lina. — À propos, elle vient dîner demain ?

    Odpoveď

It introduces a related question: ‘Speaking of that, is she coming to dinner tomorrow?’

Here the mention of Lina prompts the question. À propos de + noun can mean ‘about/concerning’.

  23. Kartička 23

    Otázka

    What does en revanche introduce?

L’hôtel est loin du centre. En revanche, il est très calme.

    Odpoveď

A compensating advantage: ‘On the other hand, it’s very quiet.’

The quiet balances the inconvenient location. En revanche and par contre can overlap; they are not always opposites.

  24. Kartička 24

    Otázka

    What does justement signal here?

    — Il faut appeler Nina. — Justement, elle vient de m’écrire.

    Odpoveď

A relevant coincidence: ‘As it happens, she’s just written to me.’

It connects the reply directly to the suggestion. It does not mean ‘justly’ in this exchange.

  25. Kartička 25

    Otázka

What does je veux dire introduce?

Ce n’est pas urgent. Je veux dire, tu peux répondre demain.

    Odpoveď

A clarification: ‘I mean, you can reply tomorrow.’

The speaker makes ‘not urgent’ more precise. Here je veux dire explains the intended meaning rather than announcing a wish to speak.

  26. Kartička 26

    Otázka

    What does d’abord organize?

D’abord, on achète les billets. Après, on choisit l’hôtel.

    Odpoveď

The first step: ‘First, we buy the tickets.’

This is a sequencing connector. It gives the listener a useful order, rather than merely filling a pause.

  27. Kartička 27

    Otázka

What does en tout cas do here?

Je ne sais pas s’il pleuvra. En tout cas, je prends un manteau.

    Odpoveď

It sets aside the uncertainty for this decision: ‘In any case, I’m taking a coat.’

The decision holds either way. This is not evidence that it will rain.

  28. Kartička 28

    Otázka

    What does effectivement confirm?

    — Cette rue est bruyante. — Effectivement, on entend les voitures même ici.

    Odpoveď

That the observation is true: ‘Indeed, you can hear the cars even here.’

Effectivement confirms the noise in this context. It is not the English ‘effectively’ meaning efficiently.

  29. Kartička 29

    Otázka

What does eh bien do here?

    — Qu’est-ce qu’on fait maintenant ? — Eh bien, on demande de l’aide.

    Odpoveď

It leads into the response: ‘Well, let’s ask for help.’

Eh bien is a conventional spelling. Its meaning and tone vary; it does not have one fixed English equivalent.

  30. Kartička 30

    Otázka

    What does ensuite organize?

On prépare la pâte. Ensuite, on la laisse reposer.

    Odpoveď

The next step: ‘Then/next, we let it rest.’

Ensuite orders the actions. Here it does not explain their cause or add an unrelated topic.

  31. Kartička 31

    Otázka

    What does quand même express?

Il pleut, mais je sors quand même.

    Odpoveď

Despite that/all the same: ‘It’s raining, but I’m going out anyway.’

The action goes against the obstacle or expectation. Quand même has other emphatic uses; it is not always ‘anyway’.

  32. Kartička 32

    Otázka

What does ah bon ? signal here?

    — Le musée est gratuit aujourd’hui. — Ah bon ? Je ne savais pas.

    Odpoveď

Surprise at new information: ‘Oh, really? I didn’t know.’

Ah bon? can also sound skeptical depending on tone. It is not always an enthusiastic agreement.

  33. Kartička 33

    Otázka

French: you are searching for tactful wording. Recall the two-word question, literally ‘how to say?’

    Odpoveď

    Comment dire…

C’est… comment dire… compliqué. — It’s… how shall I put it… complicated. Use a real pause; no need to repeat it throughout an explanation.

  34. Kartička 34

    Otázka

French: bring up a question you just remembered. Choose au fait / en fait.

    ___, tu viens samedi ?

    Odpoveď

Au fait. — By the way, are you coming on Saturday?

The task is to raise a remembered question, rather than correct an assumption.

  35. Kartička 35

    Otázka

French: add a contrasting feature. Choose par contre / donc.

Ce sac est léger. ___, il coûte cher.

    Odpoveď

Par contre. — This bag is light. On the other hand, it’s expensive.

Price is a contrasting drawback, not a consequence of the bag’s low weight.

  36. Kartička 36

    Otázka

French: replace genre for a careful, neutral estimate.

Il y avait genre trente personnes.

    Odpoveď

Environ is a good choice: Il y avait environ trente personnes.

À peu près also works. Keep casual approximating genre mainly for recognition until you know the setting; it is unsuitable as a default formal connector.

  37. Kartička 37

    Otázka

French: Mais voyons ! said sharply to someone is always a neutral ‘let me think’. True or false?

    Odpoveď

    False.

It can convey reproach or protest, roughly ‘Come on!’ Context, recipient and tone distinguish it from self-directed Voyons… while thinking.

  38. Kartička 38

    Otázka

French: À propos de ton voyage, tu pars quand ? What does à propos de ton voyage mean?

    Odpoveď

    About/concerning your trip.

This phrase introduces the topic. It is not a filler that can be removed without affecting how the topic is framed.

  39. Kartička 39

    Otázka

French: C’est cher ; en revanche, c’est solide. Must you replace en revanche because it cannot introduce an advantage?

    Odpoveď

    No.

It fits: durability is a compensating advantage. Par contre can also mark the contrast; the context does not force one unique marker.

  40. Kartička 40

    Otázka

French: Justement, c’est là le problème. Does justement mean ‘precisely’ or ‘unfairly’ here?

    Odpoveď

Precisely. — That is precisely the problem.

It singles out the relevant point; it does not automatically express agreement with the whole preceding argument.

  41. Kartička 41

    Otázka

French: clarify what you meant with the three-word phrase ‘I mean’ beginning with je.

    Odpoveď

    Je veux dire…

Je veux dire, on peut attendre. — I mean, we can wait. Add an actual clarification; avoid using it automatically before every sentence.

  42. Kartička 42

    Otázka

French: mark the first step of a plan with the expression beginning with d’.

    ___, on vérifie les horaires.

    Odpoveď

D’abord. — First, we check the times.

Tout d’abord also works. This card practices ordering steps, not every possible meaning of d’abord.

  43. Kartička 43

    Otázka

French: ‘in any case’, regardless of an unresolved question. Recall the three-word marker beginning with en.

    Odpoveď

    En tout cas.

En tout cas, je serai là. — In any case, I’ll be there. It keeps this point valid despite the surrounding uncertainty.

  44. Kartička 44

    Otázka

French: someone says Il fait froid and you agree after stepping outside. Choose Effectivement / Pourtant, il fait froid.

    Odpoveď

Effectivement. — Indeed, it is cold.

It confirms the statement. Pourtant would introduce an unexpected contrast.

  45. Kartička 45

    Otázka

French: write the conventional two-word response marker roughly meaning ‘well’ in ___, essayons !

    Odpoveď

Eh bien, essayons ! — Well, let’s try!

Ben is an informal related spoken form. Repeating either marker is unnecessary when you can answer directly.

  46. Kartička 46

    Otázka

French: choose the next-step marker, not a conclusion.

D’abord, lis la question. Ensuite / Bref, écris ta réponse.

    Odpoveď

Ensuite. — Next, write your answer.

It advances the sequence. Bref would introduce a summary instead.

  47. Kartička 47

    Otázka

French: someone says Merci quand même after you could not solve their problem. What do they acknowledge?

    Odpoveď

Your effort despite the unsuccessful result: ‘Thanks anyway.’

Tone can change the effect. The phrase does not necessarily mean that the problem was solved.

  48. Kartička 48

    Otázka

French: Ah bon ? said with doubtful intonation proves that the listener agrees. True or false?

    Odpoveď

    False.

It can express disbelief or skepticism as well as simple surprise. Listen to tone and the following words before deciding what the reaction means.

  49. Kartička 49

    Otázka

French: you need a moment to think before answering. Recall the short hesitation sound, roughly ‘um’.

    Odpoveď

    Euh…

Euh… je cherche mes mots. — Um… I’m looking for the words. A silent pause is also fine; do not add euh to every sentence.

  50. Kartička 50

    Otázka

French: add support for a choice. Choose d’ailleurs / pourtant.

Prenons ce bus. ___, il va directement à la gare.

    Odpoveď

D’ailleurs. — Besides, it goes straight to the station.

This adds support for taking the bus. Pourtant would announce a contrast.

  51. Kartička 51

    Otázka

French: the shop is closed; draw the consequence. Complete with donc / pourtant.

Le magasin est fermé, ___ on rentre.

    Odpoveď

donc. — The shop is closed, so we’re going home.

Pourtant would signal a contrast with an expectation, rather than this straightforward consequence.

  52. Kartička 52

    Otázka

You did not hear a French receptionist. Which is the safer polite request: Hein ? / Pardon ?

    Odpoveď

    Pardon ?

Hein? is familiar and can sound abrupt when used to ask for repetition. Recognize it without treating it as the default polite request.

  53. Kartička 53

    Otázka

French: a friend says Ben non ! Is ben a negative word, or a conversational lead-in?

    Odpoveď

A conversational lead-in. Non carries the negation.

Ben can also precede oui. Its effect depends on tone and context; do not memorize ben as ‘no’ or ‘obviously’ in every response.

  54. Kartička 54

    Otázka

French: someone asks Alors, ton entretien ? What are they inviting you to do?

    Odpoveď

Give an update about your interview.

Roughly ‘So, how did your interview go?’ The short question relies on shared context; alors is not asking for a time translation here.

  55. Kartička 55

    Otázka

French: should you use du coup before every point in a formal presentation, even without a consequence?

    Odpoveď

    No.

Reserve it for a useful link in suitable conversation. In careful speech, choose a precise connector such as donc for a consequence, or simply pause; adding du coup everywhere blurs the logic.

  56. Kartička 56

    Otázka

French: Tu vois ? can be a literal question or a discourse marker. In Tu vois la montagne ?, which use is intended?

    Odpoveď

A literal question about seeing: ‘Can you see the mountain?’

The object la montagne gives voir its ordinary visual meaning. Do not translate every tu vois as a filler.

  57. Kartička 57

    Otázka

French: Le bus arrive enfin ! Does enfin mark a correction here?

    Odpoveď

    No: it means ‘finally/at last’.

The bus arrives after a wait. Compare the correction use in On part jeudi… enfin, vendredi. One English gloss will not fit both.

  58. Kartička 58

    Otázka

French: after several details, introduce a short summary. Recall the one-word marker beginning with b.

    Odpoveď

    Bref.

Bref, on a décidé de rester. — In short, we decided to stay. Use it for an actual summary, rather than before every new detail.

  59. Kartička 59

    Otázka

French: correct a false assumption. Choose en fait / au fait.

    Tu crois que j’habite ici ? ___, j’habite à Lyon.

    Odpoveď

En fait. — Actually, I live in Lyon.

This corrects an assumption. Avoid using en fait as automatic punctuation when there is no useful discourse job.

  60. Kartička 60

    Otázka

French: speaking to someone you address as vous, adapt tu vois ? without changing its basic ‘you see?’ function.

    Odpoveď

    Vous voyez ?

Keep the form consistent with the relationship. Used repeatedly, even this vous form can sound insistent; it is not needed after every explanation.

  61. Kartička 61

    Otázka

French: introduce an approximate amount with ‘let’s say’. Recall the form of dire used for this job.

    Odpoveď

    Disons…

Il faut disons vingt euros. — You need, let’s say, twenty euros. This frames an estimate; it does not make the number exact.

  62. Kartička 62

    Otázka

French: Voilà, c’est tout ce que je voulais dire. Is voilà introducing a new argument or rounding off the speaker’s point?

    Odpoveď

Rounding off the point. — There, that’s all I wanted to say.

Voilà can help close a turn; repeating it after every phrase does not add new information.

  63. Kartička 63

    Otázka

Choose the transition, not the cause, in this French exchange: Bon / Parce que, passons au point suivant.

    Odpoveď

Bon. — Right, let’s move to the next point.

It organizes the conversation. Parce que would introduce a reason, which is not the job here.

  64. Kartička 64

    Otázka

French: should you add sentence-final quoi to every sentence in a formal presentation?

    Odpoveď

    No.

It is a familiar spoken particle whose effect depends on tone. Recognizing it is useful; repeated deliberate insertion can sound distracting or overly casual.
