50 U.S. States and Capitals Flashcards

Study all 50 current U.S. state-capital pairs with 100 ordinary basic flashcards. Each retrieval direction is its own card; the deck does not depend on a special reversible-card or two-way mode.

What is included

  • State to capital: recall the capital from the full U.S. state name.
  • Capital to state: recall the state from the full capital-city name.
  • One us-state-capitals tag on every card.

Each card has one retrieval target. Answers begin with—and contain only—the requested state or capital, so no unrelated fact competes with the mapping.

Learning order

The fixed order alternates the two recall directions while mixing states across regions instead of presenting an alphabetical or geographic run. Every pair's reverse appears 45, 51, or 55 cards after its first occurrence. Similar cues and answers—including the four capitals ending in “City,” Columbia and Columbus, Denver and Dover, Lansing and Lincoln, Montgomery and Montpelier, Indianapolis and Annapolis, Charleston and Cheyenne, and North/South state names—are spaced apart in both passes. The order is deterministic and does not randomize at runtime.

Scope

This deck includes the 50 U.S. states only. Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories are excluded because they are not states.

State abbreviations, statehood dates, regions, largest cities, landmarks, flags, maps, populations, and trivia are excluded. Those facts are separate retrieval targets and would turn a focused state-capital deck into a mixed geography reference.

Sources and license

The current set and names of the 50 states were checked on August 16, 2026 against the U.S. Census Bureau ANSI/FIPS state-code table and the USAGov state government directory. Every state-capital pair was checked against the archived U.S. Department of State/USIA State Capitals table from An Outline of American Geography. The full spelling “Saint Paul” was also checked against the current USAGov Minnesota state page.

State and capital names are factual data. The cited sources are acknowledged and are not copied or relicensed. Original organization, prompts, answer presentation, metadata, description, and generated cover artwork are dedicated under CC0 1.0 Universal. This independent study deck is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Census Bureau, USAGov, or the U.S. Department of State.
