Hiragana Flashcards: 46 Basic Characters
Learn the complete modern basic hiragana set with 92 two-way cards: 46 kana-to-romaji prompts and 46 romaji-to-kana prompts.
What the cards practice
- Cards 1–46 show one hiragana character and ask for its Hepburn-style learner romaji.
- Cards 47–92 show one qualified romaji cue and ask for the hiragana character.
- Every card has the single tag
basic-hiragana, and every back begins with the answer. - The learner label
wokeeps を distinct from お on reverse cards; both を cards note that its modern pronunciation is usually “o.”
The deck follows the Japan Foundation Irodori Starter kana table for the 46 characters and core readings, including shi, chi, tsu, and fu. The facts were reviewed on August 16, 2026.
Learning sequence
The kana-to-romaji pass uses standard gojūon learning order from あ through ん. The reverse pass is a separate fixed mix rather than another predictable chart run. Every reverse card is at least 36 positions from its matching forward card, and common visually confusable characters are deliberately dispersed in the mixed pass. The published sequence is deterministic and identical for every learner.
Scope and limitations
This deck covers exactly the 46 modern basic hiragana. It excludes dakuten, handakuten, contracted sounds, historical kana, stroke order, vocabulary, and audio because those are different retrieval tasks. Mnemonics, tracing, illustrations, and example words are also excluded so each card tests one character-to-romaji or romaji-to-character mapping.
The deck does not teach handwriting, listening, vocabulary, grammar, or expanded kana.
