Dutch everyday vocabulary: home, work and family
134 English-cued cards: recall 43 Dutch nouns with de/het and their plurals, then practise 24 everyday verbs through short contexts and sentence gaps.
Um þennan stokk
Practise Dutch words for finding things at home, handling a simple working day and talking about family. The 134 cards use English instructions and glosses, with Dutch answers and short original Dutch examples translated into English. They suit beginners who can already read simple Dutch sentences, roughly A1–A2, but this is a selected vocabulary set, not a complete course or certified level.
What you recall
- 43 English meanings → the Dutch singular noun together with de or het. Treat the article and noun as one useful phrase.
- The same 43 Dutch nouns, with an English sense cue → their plural forms. The answer includes de, the definite article used with plural nouns.
- 24 Dutch verbs in short sentences → their English meaning in that context.
- 24 English verb cues with Dutch sentence gaps → a present-tense ik form. Schoonmaken has two gaps because its parts separate in the main clause.
Nouns cover rooms, furniture and household objects; people, appointments and communication at work; relatives, a family household, friends and neighbours. Verbs cover daily home routines, simple work communication and family activities. Common plural alternatives are accepted for collega, pauze and zoon. Tafels is the furniture plural practised here. The cards distinguish familie from gezin, wonen from being alive, bellen from giving a name, and halen from bringing someone to a destination.
Sequence and boundaries
The three groups are home (46 cards), work (44) and family (44), under the root tag dutch-everyday. In each group, noun production and verb recognition introduce the selected words; plural recall and verb completion follow in a mixed sequence. A word’s two tasks are separated by at least 21 other cards. Related noun/verb pairs such as vraag/vragen and antwoord/antwoorden are also separated. Later review intervals are set by the app.
Noun prompts ask for a common target word, not every possible Dutch synonym. Verb completions give a model answer; natural alternatives can be valid when they fit the sentence and meaning. The deck does not test every synonym, reverse translation of every noun, full sentence translation, listening, pronunciation, past tenses or all meanings of each word. Examples provide context rather than a complete grammar syllabus. No universal Netherlands/Flanders usage claim is made.
Sources and original work
Individual noun articles, plurals and verb forms were checked against the Algemeen Nederlands Woordenboek from the Instituut voor de Nederlandse Taal. Word senses and the cooking form kook were additionally checked against relevant WikiWoordenboek and Wiktionary entries. The general article rule follows Taaladvies.net; the formal alternative collegae is explained by Team Taaladvies.
The prompts, English glosses, examples, translations, selection and order were composed independently with AI assistance. Dictionary definitions, corpus quotations, protected learning inventories and private learner cards were not copied. The cover is an original AI-generated illustration.
